Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Sunday 27 July
Eastern Park Circuit - 9am - 2 Hours

We will be using various techniques to maximise the behaviour of the light. Backlighting is one of my favourites and can be used for portraiture or nature. Bokeh is Japanese for blur but is a term used for soft out of focus balls of light which can look very pleasing. Burst in this case is star burst which can be achieved when you have strong areas of light and a correct choice of aperture. Use all three to create some amazing compositions.

Architecture Photography

Saturday 30 August
Little Malop St, Geelong - 9am - 2 Hours

Karen Wekwerth
Architectural photography can be a great way of exploring and documenting a city, whether it's your home or on holiday. Its about capturing not only the design and accurate representation of a building, but to have the shots be aesthetically pleasing to the viewer's eye. An architectural photographer makes pictures, not takes pictures.

In this session, we will be covering how to better understand Architecture photography and we'll be looking at ways to take some impressive shots and the camera settings to use.

The location for the event, National Gallery of Victoria, was excellent as it provided a range of photographic opportunities involving not only exhibits but the architecture of the building and the people in the area. It was definitely nice to set the camera for black and white and to see everything from the perspective of black, white and grey tones when composing shots.

Gabriella was excellent. She was patient with our lack of knowledge of our camera, as well as listening to the skills that we really wanted to learn. Despite differing skill levels she was able to teach both of us new things so that we can now go away confident of using our cameras. I was particularly appreciative of the notes which were easy to follow and well explained.

Royal Penguins were an unexpected delight on my visit to Macquarie Island en-route to Antarctica. Full of character and with very expressive faces & body language. These love birds caught my eye because most penguin photos are of individuals or of mothers feeding babies. Taken with my Nikon Z5. 200mm, f 6.3, 1/320

Earlier this year I went back to South Africa to visit my Mum and celebrate her 80th Birthday. Mum was really keen to go to a game reserve but neither of us were willing to drive. We found an amazing company called Africa Memories Travel that caters specifically for seniors and offer door to door service and we booked a trip to Springbok Lodge. On this particular day our ranger had been notified that there were lion in the area and he did his best to drive to a point and position us where he h

It was just past 7 PM when I set up outside our place, the wind strong enough to test my tripod?s balance. The sky was perfectly clear, and the moon barely showed, just how I hoped it would be.Using the Stellarium app to track the Milky Way, I framed the shot with our home beneath the stars. One 25-second exposure later, I caught it, the galaxy stretching wide above the roof that shelters us every day.For a moment, our little brick house didn?t feel small. It felt like the center of t

I knew I had to take a photo with my iPhone otherwise this moment would be lost forever.

I love harsh light, so this was taken at midday just near my house, the sun was filtered through the trees but it was hitting this gorgeous leaf at just the right angle to give it depth and shade.

I met young Miles at Ellis Square while he was doing some rather gymnastic break dancing. Luckily, for me, I was using my Nikon Z7 which allowed me to switch from raw to jpeg giving me 9 frames per second on motor drive. I was shooting aperture preferred and used f/8 the resulting shutter speed was 1/1600 of a second. 9fps sounds fast but I only had 6 nicely composed shots out of 120 exposures.

I had spent the better part of the day moving silently through the edges of the chase looking to photograph deer. It was one of those days that seemed perfect on paper: overcast skies that softened the light, barely a breath of wind, and a camera battery at full charge. But nature is nothing if not humbling. The deer remained ghost-like, unseen despite hours of quiet patience and soft steps.By late afternoon my hopes had dimmed so I began the slow walk back to the car. The path wound through

CPKC Rail Engine 9350 plus one heading east out of Winnipeg to deliver it's freight to Eastern Canada and possibly countries beyond on this beautiful summer day. Engine 9350 is a Diesel/Electric Locomotive which was built in February 2012 by General Electric and produces 4400HP which is capable to propel it to a top speed of 75mph. I love to photograph trains whenever I get a chance. To me they are iconic.
