50mm Lens Meetup

Sunday 08 June
Geelong Waterfront - 9am - 2 Hours

Karen Wekwerth
The 50mm lens is one of the flexible and useful lenses in any photographer’s gear bag. It is neither a wide-angle or telephoto lens, but allows the camera to see on the same scale as your eye. As such, it can be used for a variety of styles, from landscape and street photography to portrait and product photography. In this meetup, we’ll review the basic camera settings. We’ll then cover some of the advantages of shooting with a prime lens, and some basic techniques to using the 50mm lens. As always, there will be ample opportunities for you to put your new knowledge into practice.

Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Sunday 27 July
Eastern Park Circuit - 9am - 2 Hours
Geelong Photography Group
Karen Wekwerth
We will be using various techniques to maximise the behaviour of the light. Backlighting is one of my favourites and can be used for portraiture or nature. Bokeh is Japanese for blur but is a term used for soft out of focus balls of light which can look very pleasing. Burst in this case is star burst which can be achieved when you have strong areas of light and a correct choice of aperture. Use all three to create some amazing compositions.

The location for the event, National Gallery of Victoria, was excellent as it provided a range of photographic opportunities involving not only exhibits but the architecture of the building and the people in the area. It was definitely nice to set the camera for black and white and to see everything from the perspective of black, white and grey tones when composing shots.

Gabriella was excellent. She was patient with our lack of knowledge of our camera, as well as listening to the skills that we really wanted to learn. Despite differing skill levels she was able to teach both of us new things so that we can now go away confident of using our cameras. I was particularly appreciative of the notes which were easy to follow and well explained.

I wanted to do a series of still life images using dry arrangements. This is the first image in the series (of 3 so far). The subject(s) come from my garden. The seed pods are from a Foxglove Tree in my back garden. The composition sees them stretching away from the light! Make of that what you will.

Anytime there is a chance for an Aurora photo in Ballarat I am on the hunt. It is one of my favourite things to photograph. For an upcoming work assessment I was focusing on light and or star trails for a slow shutter speed task. I decided to combine my love of astro photograph with my love for the Aurora and merge the 2 into one

The wetlands adjacent to Ballarat's Botanical Garden are quite secluded and walking around it feels like you are in a different world. Peaceful and contemplative. However, this image was taken very near Wendouree Parade where I parked.Around the wetlands there are gaps in the trees and shrubs which afford 'windows' into the wet areas. I like to think of them as 'rooms'.

I was walking around the rocks at sunset, enjoying the clouds, and thinking I had better get to shelter as that rain burst was heading my way. The sun suddenly highlighted the underside of the rain cloud, and I managed a few shots.I also got rained on very soon afterwards!Canon R6M2 with kit lens 24-105mm.ISO 2000, 24mm, f9.0, 1/1000s. The Old Oak Tree, 2025.This is one of my favorite trees. It is situated alone in a huge field on a little farm near where I live. Every time I see it and the little rope swing that hangs from it, it just fills me with a sense of peace and tranquility. I wanted to portray that in this minimalist, high key version of it.
